TORONTO, Dec. 21, 2011 – Mamdouh Shoukri, president & vice-chancellor of York University, showcases the University’s accomplishments over this past year and looks to the future in the new video Building York’s Future: 2011 Year in Review. See Video

Calling 2011 a wonderful year for York University, Shoukri says, "I believe that 2012 will be even a better year."

In the video, Shoukri highlights how construction of new infrastructure at York has moved the University closer to its goal of an expanded presence in life sciences and engineering. As part of this vision, York recently announced the expansion of the Faculty of Science & Engineering and the creation of the Lassonde School of Engineering.

York’s long tradition of research that impacts our world is also featured, including Faculty of Health Professor Rebecca Pillai Riddell’s work in York’s O.U.C.H. Lab (Opportunities to Understand Childhood Hurt laboratory); Professor Amro Zayed’s research on honey bees; Professor Lauren Sergio’s work as a leading expert on sport concussion; Professor Hugh Wilson’s 3D brain research; and Professor Jennifer Kuk’s work on obesity. More than 11,400 students graduated from York University during convocation this year – citizens who will build communities, create new opportunities and help shape an even better Canada. A few of them tell us, in their own words, what their experience was like at York.

One of the most important events at York – and a personal favourite of Shoukri's – is convocation, which continues to grow every year. In 2011, some 11,400 students graduated from York University. "The impact of York University is tremendous in this country," says Shoukri.

Before heading out as citizens of the world, where they will build communities, create new opportunities and help construct an even better Canada, a few of these new alumni talk about their experiences at York.

With the end of 2011 around the corner, Shoukri looks forward to all the possibilities that the year 2012 will bring.
