TORONTO, May 23, 2001 -- York University’s graduating film and video artists will premiere their new productions in Seen on the Screen, a two-part showcase taking place June 1 and 2.
15 original fiction, documentary and experimental works will be featured. Titles include:
- Convergence , a rock'n'roll zombie adventure directed by Samuel Kates
- A Separate Reality , Rob Crowther’s tale of a school project on cyberspace that leads a young man on a journey of self-discovery
- Found Footage Videos, a retroactive romp through Hollywood gesture by Hilda Rasula
- In Timbuktu , directed by James Goodall, in which the last modern cowboy braves the frontier in his rusted steed
- Milk and Honey - two identities, same religion: a conversation with two Jewish women talk, directed by Yonni Rose
- Unfurl, directed by Blake Hamilton, in which a dying author meets his own creation
- Requiem, Manon Houle’s film on the bridging power of music
- Doe, Ray, Me – "Doe, killed by Ray, avenged by Me", directed by Matthew Burke.
York’s Department of Film & Video is one of Canada’s foremost training institutions in the field. About 45 up-and-coming directors, producers, cinematographers, screenwriters and film scholars graduate from the program each year. Alumni include members of Rhombus Media, producers of The Red Violin and many award-winning arts documentaries; cinematographers Mark Irwin (There’s Something about Mary) and Paul Sarossy (Felicia’s Journey, The Sweet Hereafter); story editor Guy Mullaly (Street Legal, Side Effects, The Highlander); Bronwen Hughes, director for film (Forces of Nature) and television (Elvis: Airborne, Kids in the Hall); producers Bonnie Palef (Marvin’s Room, The Cemetery Club) and Risa Shuman (Saturday Night at the Movies, TVOntario); and visual effects editor Tim Eaton (Twister, Men in Black, Forrest Gump).
Seen on the Screen gives viewers the chance to talent-spot this year’s crop of graduates. The show runs Fri. June 1 and Sat. June 2 at 7:00 p.m. in Curtis Lecture Hall "L" at York University, 4700 Keele St. A different program will be shown each evening. Admission is free. For more information, call 416-736-5149.
