TORONTO, March 16, 2010 -- Benjamin W. Heineman, Jr., the former general counsel and senior vice-president of GE, who revolutionized the role of lawyers in major corporations, will deliver the third Davies Fund Lecture at York University’s Schulich School of Business on Wednesday, March 17, 2010 at 12:30 pm in the Schulich Auditorium. Members of the public and the media are invited to attend.
Heineman, currently a senior fellow at Harvard Law School and at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, will discuss "High Performance with High Integrity: A Call for Corporate Vision, Values and Leadership."
His talk is the third in a series in a business law lecture program made possible by the generous support of Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP. Davies is one of Canada’s leading commercial law firms, practising nationally and internationally from offices in Toronto, Montreal and New York. The lecture program is part of the Hennick Centre for Business and Law and is designed to create excitement for business law within Osgoode and Schulich’s student communities and to help the Law School better connect with the broader legal and business communities in Toronto.
During Heineman’s tenure at GE, he worked with Jack Welch and others to create the modern in-house legal department and redefined the role that lawyers play in business. A regular contributor to The Atlantic, BusinessWeek and other publications, Heineman is one of the world’s foremost experts on the legal profession. He has written on corporate governance, business strategy, corporate citizenship and globalization.
Prior to GE, Heineman was a managing partner at Sidley & Austin and served as assistant secretary for planning and evaluation with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. He is the author of the book High Performance with High Integrity.
