TORONTO, March 2, 2010 -- York University’s Victorian Studies Network will host a talk by author Maureen Jennings on Thursday, March 4, part of a new lecture series featuring contemporary writers who reinvent Victorian society and its characters.

Jennings is best-known as the creator of Detective William Murdoch, and the re-creator of Victorian Toronto in such novels as Except the Dying, Poor Tom Is Cold, and Vices of My Blood. The novels form the basis for the television series “Murdoch Mysteries,” aired on Citytv.

As the inaugural speaker for this annual event, Jennings will discuss her research methods in recreating the Victorian era in her fiction, with a special focus on Vices of My Blood, as well as the challenges of writing in the genre. She will also answer questions from the audience.

Vices of My Blood immerses readers in late-19th-century Toronto, where the hero’s investigation of a grisly murder reveals both the gritty underworld of the city’s working poor and the shameful secrets of its most prominent citizens.
