TORONTO, December 7, 2009 -- As we mark the 20th anniversary of the massacre of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, let us remember the victims’ families, the survivors, faculty, staff and students, and all those whose lives changed forever on that day.

Today, we mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with a number of events:

  • The Silent Witness Project - a free art installation in Vari Hall representing the 14 women who were killed on December 6, 1989. (9am -6pm)
  • A silent march/vigil around campus (6pm at the fountain in the Harry Arthurs Common outside Vari Hall)
  • A free screening of director Denis Villeneuve’s 2009 dramatic film Polytechnique at the Nat Taylor Cinema, N102 Ross Building. (7pm)

The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is also an opportunity to reflect on the scourge of violence against women in our society, and a time for us all to think about the actions each of us can take to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women.
