TORONTO, May 22, 2007 -- York University’s LaMarsh Centre for Research on Violence and Conflict Resolution has stepped forward as a partner to support this year’s Louise Russo Walk Against Violence Everywhere (W.A.V.E.), being held on Sunday, May 27th at The Toronto Track and Field Centre at York’s Keele campus.
First organized in 2006, W.A.V.E. is the vision and brainchild of community safety activist Louise Russo, who became a victim of violence when she was shot and left paralyzed in a senseless drive-by shooting in April 2004. She has since been a guest speaker at various forums, sharing her story and inspiration to empower youth to take charge of their lives and reduce violence in our community.
“We are really excited to hold the event in partnership with the LaMarsh Centre for Research at York University” explains Russo, “We look forward to families and businesses coming together and committing to making our communities a place where all people can live, learn and play without fear.”
“One by one we can make a difference,” says Russo, who along with honourary WAVE co-chairs, Hon. John Tory MPP and Ontario PC Leader; Julian Fantino, Commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police; and Toronto City Councilor George Mammolitti will be on hand at the event. Other dignitaries who have been strong supporters and are expected to attend include Toronto Mayor David Miller, Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair and York Regional Police Chief, and York University alumnus, Armand LaBarge.
Last year’s 2.5 km walk was a great success, attracting 1,000 participants and raising $45,000. Proceeds go back to the community in recognition of youth making a positive difference in their communities. Five Louise Russo Youth Awards of $2,000 will be given to students between the ages of nine to 19 who exemplify the qualities of respect, responsibility and leadership in curbing violence. The award recipients will be recognized at the walk and will apply their money either towards an education/camp experience or towards post secondary tuition.
W.A.V.E. is a non-profit organization that raises awareness and funds to reduce violence. The walk will include school children, parents, community members, organizations and community leaders from across Toronto.
The LaMarsh Centre for Research on Violence and Conflict Resolution was established at York University in 1980. Named after the late politician, Member of Parliament, lawyer, and author Judy LaMarsh, it is dedicated to encouraging research that explores the themes of violence and conflict resolution in Canadian society. The LaMarsh Centre aims to support, conduct, and disseminate the results of research on violence and conflict resolution.
An investment in our youth and their ability to make a difference in reducing violence today will surely provide tomorrow’s future. To participate or to make a donation, visit www.louiserussowave.ca for more information.
