TORONTO, April 17, 2007 -- On behalf of the entire York University community, I want to express our deep sense of shock and sadness in the wake of yesterday's tragedy at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, in Blacksburg, VA.
York's academic community of students, faculty and staff extends its condolences to the families and friends of the victims who were caught up in this tragic incident and to the entire Blacksburg community.
As institutions of higher learning we strive to protect academic freedom, which is based on the safety and security of every member of our community.
For now it is important that the police and the university administration complete their investigations and, as the details of this tragedy unfold, we will be looking to see what lessons can be drawn for us here at York.
