The Vice President Students, at the direction of Senate, reminds faculty and students of the long-standing Senate policy and practice of not scheduling classes on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur or the evenings prior to these religious holy days (Monday, October 3 from 7-10 p.m.; all day and evening Tuesday, October 4; all day and evening Wednesday, October 5, 2005; Wednesday, October 12 from 7-10 p.m. and all day and evening Thursday, October 13).
At a Senate meeting held on Thursday, September 22, the University Senate - which is York's highest academic governing body - discussed an extensive report on the scheduling of examinations and classes. One outcome of the discussion was to confirm that there will be no change in the longstanding practice of not holding classes and examinations on certain Jewish High Holidays. Any information that you may have received indicating that classes will be held on these days is misleading. Any instructor who indicates that there will be classes on these days is not adhering to Senate's guidelines. You are not required to attend a class outside of the published class schedule and must not be penalized in any way for not attending.
