TORONTO, May 3, 2005 -- Robert J. Tiffin has been appointed to the position of vice-president students, Lorna R. Marsden, president and vice-chancellor of York University, announced yesterday.

"The increasing emphasis on students’ satisfaction with their university experience ensures that the activities of the Student Services Division will continue to play a major role in the future of York University and our common success,” said Marsden. “I have every confidence in Rob Tiffin as he formally takes on this important leadership role as vice-president students."

Tiffin, formerly assistant vice-president students and registrar at York, had served as acting vice-president students since January, 2005. With over 30 years of experience in recruitment, admissions, retention and registrar matters in post-secondary education, Tiffin has a thorough understanding of technology and client services in the academic and administrative environments.  Prior to coming to York, Tiffin served as the associate vice-president student services at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ont.

"What I enjoy about student services is getting to know the people you meet along the way", says Tiffin. "I am delighted at the prospect of continuing to interact with current and future York students as we strive together to help achieve their goals."

His appointment as VP at York is the result of a formal search using outside consultants, which identified him as a premier candidate for the post. “The Search Committee composed of faculty, students, staff and administrators unanimously recommended Mr. Tiffin’s appointment,” noted Marsden.

The Student Services portfolio encompasses Student Community and Leadership Development, Student Client Services, Career Services, Office of the Registrar, Student Financial Services, College Masters, Student Conduct and Dispute Resolution, the Counselling and Development Centre, and Sport and Recreation.
