TORONTO, February 22, 2005 -- As part of its new focus on Quebec-Ontario relations, York University’s Glendon College will host a seminar February 23 - 25 to explore the unique relationship between two of Canada’s founding provinces.
Entitled “Ontario-Quebec Relations: New Realities – New Challenges,” the three-day event brings together prominent Québec and Ontario public leaders and scholars. Featured speakers will include: Hon. Benoit Pelletier, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs of Québec, Hon. John Milloy, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs of Ontario and the Hon. Mauril Bélanger, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, Minister responsible for Official Languages, Minister responsible for Democratic Reform and Associate Minister of National Defence. Organized by Glendon College’s Chair of Québec Studies, the symposium will address the current status of Ontario-Québec relations, subsequent to the significant change in direction that has marked their relationship since the 1960s.
The unique relationship between Canada's two founding provinces has been a central focus for York University's Glendon College since its founding in 1966. The creation of the Glendon Chair of Québec Studies in 2001 – the result of a groundbreaking agreement between York University and the Government of Québec – provided a major milestone in the College's mandate. Four titulars visited Glendon College – Jean-Louis Roy, Bruno Ramirez, Daniel Salée, and Simon Langlois – and they have organized four prominent symposiums. The works presented at the first were published in a book edited by Jean-Louis Roy and Simon Langlois - Rapprocher les solitudes (Nota Bene, 2003).
