TORONTO, January 21, 2005 -- Yesterday, a violent protest was held at York University, organized by a small group calling themselves “GRAIN” (Grass Roots Anti-Imperialist Network).  This group is not a recognized student club at York.

Violent acts were initiated by the protesters against police. Due to these events, the University wishes to reaffirm its policy of non-disruption of classes to allow students and faculty to pursue their studies in a peaceful and safe learning environment.

Protests are not permitted in Vari Hall due to the inevitable disruption of classes.

Yesterday, exams were disrupted and some classes held in Vari Hall had to be cancelled.

In response to information that a second demonstration is planned for today in Vari Hall, the University has provided an alternate venue:

BURTON AUDITORIUM  (Fine Arts Building)

MEMBERS OF THE YORK COMMUNITY WHO WISH TO ENGAGE IN A PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION ARE WELCOME TO USE THIS LOCATION.

York University supports the right to peaceful demonstration and the Canadian values of tolerance and respect for others.

PLEASE RESPECT THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT HERE AT YORK.
