Former Supreme Court Justice Peter deCarteret Cory will be 11th Chancellor
TORONTO, June 10, 2004 -- The Honourable Peter deCarteret Cory, former Canadian Supreme Court Justice and distinguished international jurist, will be installed as 11th Chancellor of York University on Saturday, June 12, 2:30 p.m. at convocation ceremonies at the Glendon Campus.
Mr. Cory succeeds Chancellor Avie Bennett, Chairman of the Board of McClelland & Stewart Ltd. and Chairman of the Historica Foundation of Canada, who served as York’s Chancellor since 1998.
Mr. Cory, who studied at Osgoode Hall Law School and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1989, is highly sought-after by governments and international leaders for his legal and public policy expertise. In 2002, he was appointed Commissioner by the governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland to investigate six controversial murder cases involving alleged collusion by security forces in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republican Army. Following intense interest from parties involved in the peace process, Mr. Cory reported his findings in October 2003 to the governments of Ireland and the United Kingdom, urging judicial inquiries into several of the cases.
In recognition of his legal contribution and record of public service, Mr. Cory was appointed as a Companion to the Order of Canada in 2002.
