York U. international conference looks at Islamic diaspora

Speakers to explore issues of gender, culture and human rights

TORONTO, May 6, 2004 -- Leading scholars on Islam and its many aspects will meet in Toronto tomorrow at an international conference sponsored by several York University research organizations. The conference, “The Making of the Islamic Diaspora” will be held at the Delta Chelsea Hotel, Toronto, Friday through Sunday.

 

The conference will feature speakers from around the world including Canada, England, France, Iran, Italy, Lebanon, Turkey and the U.S. The conference begins at 9 a.m. on Friday and continues through Sunday.

 

More than 30 speakers will take part in eight panel discussions covering various aspects of Islam and the impact of the dispersal of Islamic peoples throughout the world. The guest of honor at the dinner reception being held Saturday is The Honourable Zahira Kamal, Minister of Women’s Affairs for Palestinian National Authority in Ramallah. York University President and Vice-Chancellor Lorna R. Marsden will deliver the opening remarks at the dinner which begins Saturday at 7 p.m.

 

The panel discussions will explore topics such as memory and identity, gender, cultural differences, fundamentalism and human rights, generational differences, and the media.

 

The conference is sponsored by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Major Collaborative Research Initiatives; the Diaspora, Islam and Gender Project; the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, York University; The Ford Foundation Educational Project for Palestinians; the York Centre for Refugee Studies; and the York Centre for Feminist Research.
