York U to mark anniversary of Rwanda genocide

TORONTO, April 7, 2004 -- York University faculty members from the Centre for Refugee studies are available to comment on today’s United Nations’ Day of Reflection marking the 10th anniversary of the Rwanda genocide. The centre will also organize a talk by Esther Mujawayo, a survivor of the 1994 killings on April 15. (For details see below.) The following faculty members of the Centre for Refugee studies can comment on Rwanda:

 

Howard Adelman, Professor of Philosophy, founding director of the Centre for Refugee Studies and Editor of Refuge until 1993, has written widely on Rwanda. His major publications include: The Path of a Genocide: The Rwanda Crisis from Uganda to Zaire and Early Warning and Conflict Management: the Genocide in Rwanda (with Astri Suhrke; Transaction Books, 1999). Prof. Adelman has written extensively on humanitarian intervention, membership rights, ethics, and refugee policy and refugee resettlement. Peter Penz is the current Director of the Centre for Refugee Studies.  He has published articles on atrocities policing, state sovereignty and international justice as well as power and justice in international relations. He can be reached at 416-736-2100 ext. 66662 / ppenz@yorku.ca

 

Gerald Caplan is an external associate of the Centre for Refugee Studies and author of "Rwanda: The Preventable Genocide", prepared for an independent commission appointed by the Organization of African Unity. He is former director of the CUSO program in Nigeria and was national director of the New Democratic Party of Canada. He is also the founder of an informal movement known as Remembering Rwanda. Obiora Chinendu Okafor, professor at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, is an expert on International Human Rights, Refugee Law and Human Rights in Africa. Rwanda genocide survivor Esther Mujawayo to speak at York U.

 

The centre will also commemorate the 10th anniversary of the genocide with a special lecture on April 15 by Esther Mujawayo, a survivor of the 1994 killings by Hutu extremists. The lecture will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Senior Common Room of McLaughlin College at York’s Keele Campus, 4700 Keele St. Mujawayo, currently on a cross-Canada speaking tour, was invited to York by the Centre for Refugee Studies, the Centre for African Studies, York’s Centre for Practical Ethics, McLaughlin College and the Dean of  York’s Faculty of Arts.
