Report reveals bleak situation for abused women on welfare

TORONTO, April 2, 2004 -- A new report on the experiences of abused women in Ontario’s welfare system will be released in the Queen’s Park Media Studio at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 5.

The report is the result of research undertaken from the Woman and Abuse Welfare Research Project launched in 2000. It was written by York University Law Professor Janet Mosher (Principal Investigator) and researchers from Carleton and Queen’s Universities in conjunction with the Ontario Association of Interval and Transition Houses and the Ontario Social Safety Network.

The 113 page report is the result of extensive interviews with abused women in the welfare system. It outlines 34 recommendations for the Ontario government to reform the welfare system and better help and protect abused women who are making use of this system.
