TORONTO, March 23, 2004 -- York University is hosting a class of grade two students from Shoreham Public School in an innovative program to help young children discover the joy of reading, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 24.

The 7 and 8-year-olds will arrive at York’s Vanier College at 9:15 a.m. where they will be greeted by York students who will engage them in a fun-filled morning of reading games and programming to help boost their literacy skills. The York students have been engaged with the young students in their Shoreham Public School classroom as “reading buddies” throughout the semester.

Robert Drummond, dean of York’s Faculty of Arts, will join the group 9:30 to 10 a.m. to read to the young group.

The event, part of the Shoreham / Vanier College literacy partnership, is organized by York University’s Vanier College Master Carole Carpenter.

The York students will receive a literacy training certificate for their work in the program.
