TORONTO, February 9, 2004 -- He was only seven when he died but six years later the memory of Randal Dooley continues to inspire the Jane-Finch community to build a better future for its young people. The latest results of those efforts will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 11 as the community and York University release details of the 2004 Randal Dooley Memorial Entrance Bursary award program.

Susie Gotha, an event planner and member of the T.O. Roots and Culture Canada Day Festival committee that raises money for the bursary, said she is thrilled with the success of the project. "This is a major accomplishment for the community as well as the festival which is only in its second year," said Gotha, who is a York U. alumnus. "I’d like to convey my heartfelt thanks to everyone for believing in the community’s future and helping to make it better."

A cheque for the proceeds of the 2003 festival will be presented at a ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. at Chancellor’s in the Underground Restaurant, York Student Centre. Dr. Lorna Marsden, president and vice-chancellor of York University, Robert Drummond, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and representatives of the York University Foundation will attend along with members of the Jane-Finch community, the festival committee and past recipients of the Randal Dooley Memorial Entrance Bursary award.

Established in 2002, the bursary supports students from the Jane-Finch community entering first year at York’s Faculty of Arts. Community donors support the fund with money raised each Canada Day and matching funds from sponsor Western Union Canada. That total amount is then matched again by the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund through the York University Foundation. This year’s proceeds are expected to triple the fund’s original endowment.

"Western Union is extremely pleased to be able to help support the Randal Dooley Memorial Entrance Bursary at York University," said Brian Fox, Director of Field Marketing for Western Union Canada. "The generosity of the Jane and Finch community to this great cause has been outstanding. It is always through working together that great things are accomplished. Western Union is honored to be associated with this noble community effort of building a better tomorrow for our children."

Chancellors is located in the Underground Restaurant on the first floor of the York Student Centre, Keele Campus, 4700 Keele St.
