TORONTO, February 9, 2004 -- Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Director of the York Centre for International and Security Studies (YCISS), for a three-year term, to begin July 1, 2004, with a possible extension for an additional two years.

The Centre is dedicated to the study of international peace and security issues. The activities of the Centre range from large, interdisciplinary collaborative research projects to individual faculty projects, supported by a variety of seminar series, publications, and conferences. The Centre also at times serves as the administrative hub of a number of national professional organizations. Traditionally, the research of the Centre has fallen into four themes: strategic studies, regional conflicts, non-traditional analyses of conflict and security, and the political economy of security.

Applicants are expected to be members of the full-time faculty at York University, and to have a distinguished record of scholarship and interdisciplinary research interests in security and strategic studies broadly defined as well as the more general areas of international relations and global affairs. Knowledge of Canadian foreign, security, and defence policies is a distinct asset.

The Director is expected to administer the day-to-day budget, financial, organizational and academic activities of the Centre, to develop additional funding sources, and to maintain an active individual and collaborative research program. The Director should have the interest and capacity to initiate and to sustain a mix of curiosity-driven and commissioned research and related scholarly activities, and be cognizant of the importance of engaging relevant areas of public policy. The successful applicant will receive an administrative stipend and an appropriate course load reduction as stipulated by the YUFA Collective Agreement.

Applications and nominations (including Curriculum vitae and the names of three referees who may be contacted) should be sent to Donna Smith, Executive Officer for Research Centres, Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation, 200 York Lanes. Applicants are also asked to submit a statement about their vision for the Centre including goals, objectives, strategy of action and leadership style. Applications and nominations received prior to March 1, 2004 will be sure to receive the full attention of the search committee. None will be considered after that date.
