TORONTO, October 24, 2003 -- A forum at York University tomorrow – Saturday, October 25 – will explore the nature and culture of the engineering profession and the role women engineers play in shaping that identity.
"We are pleased to host the fall meeting of the Women in Engineering Advisory Committee," said Dr. Gillian Wu, dean of York’s Faculty of Pure and Applied Science. "York prides itself on attracting increasing numbers of young women into science, technology and engineering programs and playing a leading role in encouraging the full participation of women in these fields."
The keynote speaker, Bob McDonald, award-winning science journalist and host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks, will provide a historic overview of the major developments in science and technology and how these developments have been perceived by the public over time.
A panel discussion will follow on women’s contribution to science and engineering and its culture, featuring: Sarmite Bulte, M.P., Chair, Prime Minister’s Task Force on Women Entrepreneurs; Valerie Davidson, P.Eng., University of Guelph and Karen Webb, P.Eng., Rogers AT &T Wireless.
This forum is presented by the Women in Engineering Advisory Committee (WEAC) of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE) with the sponsorship of York University.
The event will run from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will be held in the Computer Science and Engineering Building (Lecture Hall A), York University, 4700 Keele Street.
