TORONTO, October 22, 2003 -- York University will play host to a special daylong forum "Globalization: Health and the Ethics of Care" on Thursday, October 23 in the Moot Court at Osgoode Hall Law School.
Keynote speakers include Lesley Doyal, professor of Health and Social Care, University of Bristol and Len Doyal, professor of Medical Ethics, Queen Mary’s School of Medicine and Dentistry, Barts and the London. The forum will run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The forum, sponsored by York’s Centre for Health Studies and Centre for Practical Ethics, will feature two sessions. The morning session, "Women and Health in the Global Context" will explore the links between global restructuring, gender and health. In the afternoon, the topic will be "Needs, Rights and Duties: The Ethics of Health Care".
The morning event will include a panel discussion of the Canadian aspects of the theme with Catherine Kulisek, Women’s Bureau, Health Canada; Joan Gilmour, professor, Osgoode Hall Law School at York University and Linda Silas, president, Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions. In the afternoon, York professor Joel Lexchin, MD with the School of Health Policy and Management, will offer remarks in response.
The session is open to the public and there is no registration fee. Osgoode Hall Law School is located on the Keele Campus of York University, 4700 Keele St.
