Students to meet Alumni mentors today
TORONTO, October 8, 2003 -- York University’s Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies has launched its first-ever mentorship program for students and alumni. The purpose of this initiative is to foster career and personal development by pairing students with volunteer graduates from a chosen field.
"We are very excited to be launching this new student-alumni mentorship program that will provide meaningful and concrete support to our students by linking experienced and supportive alumni with current students. We are supporting education outside of the classroom as well as providing a way for our alumni to stay connected with their alma mater," said Rhonda Lenton, Dean of Atkinson Faculty.
Dean Lenton will welcome the first group of mentors and students at an event featuring guest-speaker Diane Baker-Mason, author of Bare Bones and the screenplay for Men with Brooms. Baker-Mason is a graduate of Atkinson and Osgoode Hall Law School at York U. Mentors and students will meet separately to learn more about how the program works before being introduced to their partners.
The mentorship program is a non-academic program administered by the Dean's Office of the Atkinson Faculty, and supported by a volunteer advisory committee comprised of Atkinson students and alumni. Mentors provide support, guidance and encouragement to students in a variety of areas. It enables both alumni and students to build new networks, and facilitates valuable interaction between alumni and students on topics of mutual interest.
