The Rise of Paul Martin – York U. Experts Comment

TORONTO, October 3, 2003 -- The following York University experts are available to comment on Paul Martin’s rise to power and the issues he will face as prime minister:

James Laxer: One of Canada’s leading political scientists and best-selling authors, Laxer just published The Border: Canada, The U.S. and Dispatches from the 49th Parallel (Doubleday, 2003). Laxer says Paul Martin should up the ante on Canadian sovereignty in the face of U.S. pressures over Canada’s Marijuana laws, fingerprinting Canadians at the border, cheap prescription drugs, and increased military and economic integration.

Daniel Drache: A professor of political science, Drache is a leading expert on trade, the WTO and health-care issues. His forthcoming book is In Search of North America: Do Borders Matter? He can comment on how Martin will define Canada’s role in international trade matters.

Patrick Monahan: Professor of law and Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School, Monahan can comment on the future of democratic reform and intergovernmental relations under Martin.

Bernie Wolf: Professor of economics in York’s Schulich School of Business, Wolf can comment on Martin’s taxation and fiscal policies, past and future.

David Shugarman, a political science professor and director of York University's Centre for Practical Ethics, has researched and written about political ethics, protest parties, movements and Western alienation.

Seth Feldman: Professor of fine arts and director of the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies, can comment on  issues of Canadian identity and sovereignty.
