TORONTO, April 29, 2003 -- York University researchers have been awarded a total of $2.9 million in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for 34 projects ranging from the study of immigration in the global economy, and investor behaviour in the stock market, to issues of police accountability, and the role of Canadian nurses in war and peace.

Funding at universities across Canada totaling $73 million was announced today by Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development) Dr. Rey Pagtakhan, and SSHRC President Marc Renaud, on behalf of Industry Minister Allan Rock.

"Whatever the issue – health, language, work, trade, ethics, biodiversity, terrorism – social science and humanities research is fundamental to our ability to understand the world around us, and to make informed decisions as individuals and as a society," said Minister Rock. "Today’s investment will ensure that we continue to generate the ideas Canada needs to advance."

York University Vice-President, Research and Innovation, Stan Shapson, welcomed the funding at York, noting the importance to the public of human sciences research. "We are committed to ensuring the benefits of our research support better public policy and community activity at the grassroots level," he said.
