TORONTO, April 7, 2003 -- French immersion and francophone high school students from across southern Ontario will be at York University’s Glendon College tomorrow, April 8, to explore the benefits of communicating in both official languages as part of the sixth annual French for the Future conference.
French for the Future will bring together more than 3,000 students in 12 cities across Canada including Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and St. John’s, to discuss the importance of bilingualism and biculturalism.
Glendon, York University’s bilingual campus, will host 355 students from 34 high schools at the Toronto event. Program highlights include a keynote address by Richard Pound, Canadian IOC representative and chair of the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), and a one-hour national satellite broadcast bringing all 12 locations together. Bilingual professionals from the fields of international relations, media, business, science, technology, the arts, education and sports will present workshops to the student participants.
Glendon College offers the only university setting in Canada where students work and study in both languages – making it the ideal location for this conference. French for the Future is a non-profit, student-driven, educational program. It promotes the learning of French as a smart career move, uniting French immersion and francophone communities and providing students with a positive French environment in which to practice their French-language speaking skills.
