TORONTO, September 23, 2002 -- York University is holding its ninth annual Brownbag Research Seminar series. The seminars provide a public forum for scholars in many fields, including in science and technology, culture and the humanities, to share the latest results of their research.
This year's broad range of topics include: scientific and ethical issues arising from the ability to clone human genes; the evolutionary origins of ape intelligence; how pharmaceutical companies control the medical marketplace; the use of prosthetics during the First World War; and domestic violence in Canada.
The seminar series, hosted by the School of Analytic Studies and Information Technology in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, was established by Prof. Luigi M Bianchi, professor of Physics and Natural Science.
The seminars are held Tuesdays, 12 to 2 p.m., September through April, usually in the Harry Crowe Room in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies building. A sampling of fall seminars follows:
Anyone can clone genes: What should we do with them now? -- September 24
Gillian Wu (Dean, York Faculty of Pure and Applied Science) -- a brief history of the genome project and the legal issues involved, the methods of stem cell cloning, and what various scientists think we should do with cloned genes;
You say 'tom-ey-to', and I say 'tom-ah-to': New methods for dialect geography -- October 22
Eric Wheeler (Information Technology program, York University/Atkinson) -- how Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) can be used to compile a "dialect atlas";
The steps through which humans had to pass to become what they now are -- October 29
David Johnson (Philosophy/Arts, York University) -- some of the significant cultural events through which our primate, hominid ancestors had to pass to account for our evolution as a species.
