TORONTO, September 23, 2002 -- The Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES) at York University is hosting a breakfast discussion, Wednesday, September 25, to analyze the ramifications of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder’s narrow victory in Sunday's hotly contested German Elections.
Questions to be examined will include:
How stable is the new coalition, can Schröder really govern and for how long?
What is the state of German-U.S. relations following Schröder's election stance opposing military action against Iraq? Will German-Canadian relations become more important as a result?
What does the election say about the place of multiculturalism, the influence of the extreme right, and the mood of the electorate in Europe?
Panelists are:
Dr. Andrea Fischer, former Green Party member of the German Parliament (1998-2002) and former federal minister of health;
Prof. Kurt Hübner, visiting professor of economics and political science, (CCGES);
Prof. Mark Webber, co-director, (CCGES).
The breakfast will be held from 8 to 10 a.m., and will take place at the Goethe Institute, located at 163 King Street West (St. Andrew’s Subway).
