York University launches Summer Workshops in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies

TORONTO, August 1, 2002 -- York University's Department of Dance is offering four intensive Laban/Bartenieff movement studies workshops running August 6 to 16.

Laban is a movement analysis method, devised by renowned dancer, choreographer and movement theorist Rudolph Laban, that enhances our ability to observe and describe movement and to understand its meaning. Bartenieff body work focuses on sequential movement, an area developed by Laban's student, therapist Irmgard Bartenieff, which is designed to retrain and develop functional movement patterns.

Organized by York dance professor Mary Jane Warner, the Laban/Bartenieff series offers participants the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the interrelationships of muscle groups, their functions, shapes and spatial connections. The workshops facilitate relevant professional development for practitioners in areas as diverse as dance, education, acting, athletics, psychotherapy and movement therapy. The workshops serve as prerequisites for those planning to pursue certification.

An introductory and advanced session will be available in both areas. Each 5-day workshop will offer students an enriching learning experience within the intimacy of a small group led by either Nadine Saxton, Susan Cash or Dianne Woodruff, all experienced dance instructors and certified movement analysts.

York's Dance Department is recognized nationally as a leader in dance education and research, and a major contributor to the infrastructure of dance performance and scholarship in Canada and beyond. These workshops represent an initial step towards the development of a new collaboration with the Laban Institute of Movement Studies in New York.
