The Canadian Response to September 11th: Taking Stock and Next Steps

TORONTO, June 12, 2002 -- Nine months after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre, governments around the world continue to grapple on a daily basis with the threat of global terrorism.

Leading experts and analysts from Canada and the United States will meet June 17 at a York University symposium to assess the Canadian response to this new challenge and identify what direction Canadian policy should take in the coming months and years.

Keynote speaker will be The Honourable William Graham, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who will address the symposium from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on the subject "The Balance between Security and Human Rights Post Sept. 11."

Jointly sponsored by York University’s Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies and the Centre for Public Law and Public Policy at Osgoode Hall Law School, the symposium will take place from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Osgoode Professional Development Centre, 1 Dundas Street West, 26th floor.

Among the topics to be addressed are:

Canada’s early experience with the new police powers put in place through the enactment last fall of Bill C-36, the Anti-Terrorism Act;

the future of Canada-U.S. relations and border issues since September 11th; and

the state of Canadian public opinion on these issues.
