TORONTO, May 21, 2002 -- Cinesiege, the annual showcase of indie shorts by York University film grads, will be held over two nights, June 5 and 6, at the Bloor Cinema. This double-whammy cin-event features two enchanted evenings of fresh celluloid, digital video and super-16 productions that creatively explore a range of genres, from B&W silent horror to politically-fuelled animation, emotionally articulate documentary to quirky conceptual works and beyond.
Organized by York film professors Phil Hoffman and Barbara Evans, Cinesiege toasts the talents of graduating student filmmakers on the cusp of the professional realm.
"This year’s crop spans the spectrum of what film and video can do," notes Hoffman. "From the deeply personal to the deeply dark, there are even some Cinesiege productions that could be considered family viewing – but always with an edge."
A great opportunity to preview the next wave of cinematic youthquakers, Cinesiege is an event tailor-made for hardcore cinephiles interested in spotting promising new talent.
Cinesiege propels these inspired young film artists into the ranks of some impressive company. Among distinguished alumni of York’s Film & Video Department are members of Rhombus Media (The Red Violin, Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould), director Bronwen Hughes (Forces of Nature, Kids in the Hall), cinematographers Paul Sarossy (Ararat, Felicia’s Journey) and Mark Irwin (Me Myself & Irene, There’s Something About Mary), director Ali Kazimi (Narmada, Shooting Indians), filmmaker/producer Janis Lundman (Drop the Beat, Talk 16), story editor Guy Mullaly (Highlander, Street Legal), John Gajdecki of GVFX (Brain Candy, The Outer Limits), film producer Bonnie Palef (Marvin’s Room, Moonstruck), Lucasfilms’ special effects editor Tim Eaton (Twister, Men in Black) and producer Risa Shuman (Saturday Night at the Movies).
Cinesiege takes place at 9:30 pm on Wed. June 5 and Thurs. June 6 at the Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor Street West. Admission is $5 at the door. Event website: www.yorku.ca/finearts/cinesiege
