TORONTO, May 15, 2002 -- Angle On: York Screenwriting is the first annual public reading of feature film screenplays by York University’s grad and undergrad screenwriters. Scheduled for May 30 at Hugh’s Room, the evening features excerpts from 11 potent and eclectic scripts that range from dark comedy to provocative drama, fantasy and beyond.
Organized by York professor, writer/director Amnon Buchbinder (The Fishing Trip), Angle On celebrates the diverse creative explorations spawned by the only film department in Canada that offers both BFA & MFA specializations in screenwriting. This unique event spotlights the copious talents of graduating student screenwriters on the cusp of their debut into the film community. Three of the 11 writers have already been selected as residents of the Canadian Film Centre’s prestigious Professional Screenwriting Program.
Professional actors, including some surprise guests, will bring the readings to life. An excellent opportunity to preview the future scribes of the big and small screen, Angle On is an evening tailor-made for cinephiles. This exciting cin-event toasts York U’s emerging storytellers who are developing their own inspired voices under the mentorship of some of Canada’s finest film industry professionals.
The faculty of York’s Film & Video Department includes Phil Hoffman (What These Ashes Wanted), Brenda Longfellow (Shadowmaker, Tina in Mexico), Antonin Lhotsky (My Father’s Camera, The Offering), Colleen Wagner (The Monument) and Laurence Green (Thin Ice). Among distinguished alumni are members of Rhombus Media (The Red Violin, Thirty-Two Short Films About Glenn Gould), screenwriters Michelle Lovretta (The Associates) and Josh Levy (Hayseed, Do U Like 2 Watch?), filmmaker/producer Janis Lundman (Drop the Beat, Talk 16), story editor Guy Mullaly (Highlander, Street Legal) and producer Risa Shuman (Saturday Night at the Movies).
Angle On takes place at 8 pm on Thursday, May 30 at Hugh’s Room, the congenial club/restaurant, 2261 Dundas Street West (531-6604). Admission is $5 at the door. Super-fab door prizes.
