TORONTO, April 10, 2002 -- In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the York/Westview partnership that links York University, the Jane/Finch community and 11 area schools, York University is hosting a public forum on Thursday, April 11, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The forum, featuring representatives from the Jane/Finch community, its schools and York, will provide the opportunity to discuss not only the Westview partnership but, more broadly, the potential of university-schools-community partnerships for promoting equity in public education. Issues of accessibility, rising tuition and improved community resources and information will be discussed.

"There is a perception among parents and students of the Jane/Finch community that an ‘invisible wall’ exists, separating the community and its schools from accessing higher education opportunities," says Pat Saul, coordinator of the Westview partnership in the Faculty of Education at York. "This forum will examine how we can strengthen our partnership with one of Toronto’s most ethnically and culturally diverse communities by continuing to remove barriers to higher education."

The public forum will take place in room 313, York University Student Centre, 4700 Keele St. and will be broadcast on CHRY (105.5 FM), York University's campus and community radio station.
