York U. conference examines Canadian charter at 20

TORONTO, April 3, 2002 -- Some of the leading minds on constitutional affairs will gather April 12 and 13 at a York University conference, The Charter at Twenty, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The conference will begin on Friday at 6:30 p.m. with a dinner featuring keynote addresses by Roy McMurtry, chief justice of Ontario, and Stéphane Dion, president of the Privy Council and minister of intergovernmental affairs. The dinner will take place in the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Convocation Hall (Osgoode Hall building), 130 Queen St. W.

Saturday sessions run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Professional Development Program Centre (of York University’s Osgoode Hall Law School), located at 1 Dundas Street West, (26th floor).

The conference, organized by York’s Department of Political Science, will feature more than 40 constitutional and legal scholars, including: York’s Osgoode Hall Law School Dean Peter Hogg; Osgoode Prof. Patrick Monahan; York Prof. Ian Greene; McGill Prof. Christopher Manfredi; University of Calgary Prof. Rainer Knopff, and UofT Prof. Peter Russell.

"The 20th anniversary of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a significant milestone in Canada’s political evolution," said York political science Prof. Ray Bazowski. "The conference promises to provide further understanding of constitutional politics in Canada."
