TORONTO, November 29, 2001 -- Five new Canada Research Chairs awarded at York University today support a bridging of disciplines that will speed up scientific advancement in the study of pain and human consciousness, and make Canada a recognized leader in the study of citizenship.

"These appointments recognize that only an integrated approach to learning can advance the human condition," said York University President Lorna Marsden. "Our traditional strengths in the liberal arts are integral to our growing international reputation in science research, and we continue to diversify the multi-disciplinary collaborations that distinguish York University as an innovator in education."
