Media Advisory: Industry Minister Tobin at York University to announce new round of Canada Research Chairs

TORONTO, June 25, 2001 -- The Hon. Brian Tobin, Minister of Industry, will be at York University, Wednesday, June 27 at 10 a.m. to announce the academic researchers across the country who have been awarded Canada Research Chairs for innovation and discoveries in their fields. The Canada Foundation for Innovation will also announce funding for research infrastructure for these chair holders and earlier recipients. Some of the chair holders will have visual displays of their work on hand and will be available for interviews.

Through the Canada Research Chairs program, the Government of Canada supports excellence in university- based research. Chair holders are world leaders or rising stars in the natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, and social sciences and humanities. When the program is fully implemented there will be 2000 Canada Research Chairs across the country.
