Former U.S. Federal Reserve Board chair Paul Volcker, ESL pioneer Mary Ashworth to receive honorary degrees from York U. Tuesday, June 19

TORONTO, June 15, 2001 -- Paul Volcker, a former U.S. Federal Reserve Board chair credited with curbing runaway inflation in the early 1980s and Mary Ashworth, who has had a profound influence on English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching and on language policy across Canada, will receive honorary degrees from York University on Tuesday, June 19.

Ashworth will receive her honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD) and will address convocation (Faculty of Education ceremony), at 10 a.m.

Volcker will receive his honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD) and will address convocation (Faculty of Education ceremony) at 2:30 p.m.

Media welcome to attend. Both convocation ceremonies will be held on York's Keele Campus, in the Convocation tent, located east of the Centre for Film and Theatre, 4700 Keele Street.
