TORONTO, April 3, 2001 -- York University Film Studies Professor and Robarts Chair, Seth Feldman will deliver the 15th Annual Robarts Lecture: Canadian Movies, Eh?, at York University, Thursday, April 5.
Part of York’s year-long Triumph of Canadian Cinema series, Feldman will discuss Canadian film within the broader contexts of its history and the global realities of the film industry today and in the future. He will examine why "Hollywood North" is an inappropriate label of comparison between Canada and the United States, what the tenable goals for Canadian film are both as an industry and as an art form, and whether Canadian filmmakers who are making their mark on the international screen are still seen as Canadian.
"We've obviously come a long way since 1967 when the federal government established the Canadian Film Development Corporation as a means of creating a film industry, said Feldman. "Canada’s film industry is now worth $4.5 billion a year and employs, directly and indirectly more than 100,000 workers."
Feldman, a former Dean of York’s Faculty of Fine Arts, is a much-published writer on Canadian cinema and television. He is a founder and past President of the Film Studies Association of Canada and is the author of 21 documentaries for CBC radio's IDEAS as well as a frequent radio and television commentator on the arts.
The Triumph of Canadian Cinema series is sponsored by York’s Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies. The Director of the Centre is Prof. Daniel Drache. Feldman’s lecture will take place 2 - 4 p.m., in the Nat Taylor Cinema, Ross Building (North Tower, Ground Floor), York Campus, 4700 Keele Street.
The next event in the series will feature Marc Starowicz, Executive Producer of CBC’s Canada: A People's History, who will discuss the success of his popular documentary series at York University, Wed., April 18.
