TORONTO, March 2, 2001 – Marshall Cohen, Chair of the Board of Governors of York University, is pleased to announce that Dr. Lorna R. Marsden will serve a second term as President and Vice-Chancellor of York University for the period 2002-2007.
"As York University approaches its 50th anniversary, we are seeking a stability and focus on achieving our strategic plans, in building on our strengths and diversifying our programs. We believe that Dr. Marsden will provide this direction and the Board enthusiastically and unanimously agreed to ask her to serve a second five-year term beginning July 2002," Mr. Cohen said.
Marsden said she was pleased to be supported in a second term and looks forward to helping York achieve the recognition the University deserves for its strengths in teaching, research and responsiveness to the interests and concerns of its 40,000 students.
"The coming decade is crucial to the future of higher education in the country, in Toronto and York region, and the entire Greater Toronto Area. York University has the will and talent to be a key player in the innovation that will support the talent and ambition of our students, who are the leaders of tomorrow in Canada and in the world," said Marsden. Marsden was appointed to York University in 1997 after completing a term as President and Vice- Chancellor of Wilfrid Laurier University. Previously, she served an eight year term with the Senate of Canada and was a faculty member at the University of Toronto for 20 years.
Since its founding in 1959, York University has become nationally and internationally respected for its innovative research and award-winning teaching. York offers its 40,000 students programs in 10 faculties and access to research flowing from the university’s 21 research centres.
