TORONTO, February 14, 2001 -- Data released today by the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) show York University continues to grow in popularity as a post-secondary choice for graduating secondary school students.

The results show York exceeded provincial increases, both in overall applications and in applications from secondary students making York their first choice. Overall, York applications increased by 10.1 per cent, while applications across the Ontario university system grew by 6.4 per cent. Applications from Ontario high school students making York their first choice have increased by 2.4 per cent -- ahead of the provincial increase of 2.1 per cent.

"We're very pleased with the continuation of a positive trend -- an increase in first choice applicants, and an increase significantly above the system average in overall applications," said Deborah Hobson, York University Vice-President Enrolment & Student Services.

Hobson noted that the system showed applications are growing in areas in which York excels, including business, arts, sciences, fine arts and environmental studies. "Not only has York added new degrees, such as human resources management and engineering, to an already impressive list of program offerings, we continue to enhance existing programs to ensure they are current, relevant and at the forefront."

Since its founding in 1959, York University has become nationally and internationally respected for its innovative research and award-winning teaching. The third-largest university in Canada, York offers its 40,000 students programs in 10 faculties and access to research flowing from the university's 21 research centres. With its combination of dedicated and talented faculty, opportunities for bright and ambitious students, dynamic curriculum and modern campuses in one of North America's most influential urban centres, York University is setting the modern standard in academic excellence.
