BARGAINING CONTINUES: FALL TERM MAKEUP CLASSES NOT STARTING MONDAY

Share

TORONTO, January 7, 2001 -- While intense bargaining continues in hopes of a settlement, York University is not bringing back students as planned.

Because of CUPE’s continuing threats to reinforce picketing with militant external CUPE members, York University is urging students who are coming to campus to exercise due caution and patience.

"I am not prepared to let students expose themselves to any unnecessary risk. For the thousands of faculty, staff and students who will be coming to campus we urge them to exercise caution and patience, but we remind them they have a legal right to enter the University," said York President Lorna R. Marsden.

The special bus transportation will operate taking students, staff and faculty who wish to take advantage of it to the picket lines. Passengers will walk across the picket lines onto campus, and an internal shuttle bus will be available to take people to the campus core.

Instruction will be occurring in those courses for which students have already been given formal notice. The courses are  Atkinson Nursing; Education Consecutive Program; continuing Schulich MBA/IMBA and year 3 and 4 BBA/iBBA courses; and Osgoode Hall Law School.

In other programs, where remediation and makeup classes are required, there will be no classes on Monday.

Students are encouraged to continue to check the York Web site and the Information Phone lines (416) 736-5600 and 1-866-267-1100 for updates on the progress of negotiations.
