TORONTO, January 4, 2001 -- Stephen Lewis, former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations and currently adjunct professor at York University, will give the keynote address at the 14th International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI), to be held in Toronto, January 5 – 9.

The Congress, whose theme is Equity, Globalization and Change: Education for the 21st Century, is hosted by York University’s Faculty of Education with support from The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE/UT). It will bring together leading education researchers, practitioners and policymakers from more than 30 countries to discuss topics such as: local initiatives to promote change in curriculum; teaching and leadership practices such as inclusive schooling methods to meet the needs of a diverse school body; classroom computers, the Internet and other educational technologies; ways to improve the learning experiences of children such as media literacy and global studies; and how teachers and administrators accommodate change.

"Increasingly, all societies are becoming linked globally," says Dr. Alison Griffith, ICSEI 2001 chair and Associate Dean of Field Development at York University’s Faculty of Education. "With immigration and new technologies transforming the educational landscape, we need to recognize that the diversity of our classrooms requires a wide range of teaching strategies sensitive to students’ needs."

The Congress program will include school visits across the Greater Toronto Area to showcase the innovative teacher education partnerships York’s Faculty of Education has established with surrounding schools.

ICSEI 2001 will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, 123 Queen Street West, Toronto.
