TORONTO, March 29, 2004 -- York U. faculty members will be featured in two editions of the CBC Radio program ‘Ideas’ over the next two evenings. The popular program about contemporary thought will explore the subject of Canada’s working poor as part of a three-day CBC Online feature entitled ‘Paid to be Poor’.

Tonight, Craig Scott, Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies, Osgoode Hall Law School and Barbara Cameron, Associate Professor, Political Science, Atkinson Faculty School of Social Sciences will discuss what happens when rich countries like Canada claim that social and economic rights – like adequate housing and basic health care – are considered too expensive. Host Paul Kennedy will pose the question, “were we wrong to call them rights?” The show airs tonight on CBC Radio One at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

Tuesday, Leah Vosko, Canada Research Chair with the Atkinson Faculty’s School of Social Sciences, will be featured in Ideas’ presentation of a public forum held in Vancouver earlier this month. Vosko, who recently published a study on precarious employment, will discuss the impact cheaper foreign labour has on local communities. The show airs Tuesday evening on CBC Radio One at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
