TORONTO, October 29, 2002 -- On Thursday, October 31st, at 7:00 p.m. in Auditorium 204 of Glendon College (York University), Bruno Ramirez, distinguished historian, screenplay writer and author of several books will comment and discuss the screening of the award-winning movie "Caffé Italia, Montréal".
Directed by Paul Tana, written by Bruno Ramirez and Paul Tana and starring Pierre Curzi and Toni Nardi, "Caffé Italia, Montréal" won the Québec association of Film Critics’ Ouimet-Molson Prize for Best Quebec Film in 1985. "Caffé Italia" sheds rarely seen light on the Italian immigration experience in Canada. Paul Tana’s work is far removed from the conventional documentary form, mixing an eclectic blend of talking heads and archival footage with dramatizations. The film has been screened at a variety of international conferences and at institutions such as the Modern Museum of Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
Professor Ramirez is an expert on migratory patterns to and within North America. Currently, he is Chair of Quebec Studies at Glendon College (York University), the only such Chair established in English Canada. It was created with the support of the Government of Quebec to foster a better knowledge of Quebec society within academic circles in Toronto and interested segments of the public at large. To achieve this, the Chair teaches a number of courses and coordinates various activities such as conferences, special lectures and symposiums designed to stimulate positive interactions and a constructive dialogue.
His books include Crossing the 49th parallel, Migration from Canada to the United States, 1900-1930; The Italian Diaspora: Migration Across the Globe; and On the Move: French-Canadian and Italian Migrants in the North Atlantic Economy (1860-1914).
