Virtual symposium to launch report from York University Task Force on AI & Society

TORONTO, Nov. 15, 2021 – York University is hosting a virtual symposium tomorrow, Nov. 16, to launch Fostering the Future of Artificial Intelligence: Report from the York University Task Force on AI & Society.

The symposium will feature a keynote address by Manuela M. Veloso, Head of JP Morgan Chase AI Research and Herbert A. Simon University Professor in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University.

A panel discussion and Q-and-A will follow the keynote. The discussion will be moderated by task force co-chairs Professor Giuseppina D’Agostino at Osgoode Hall Law School and the founder-director of IP Osgoode, and Professor James Elder, York Research Chair in the Faculty of Health and the Lassonde School of Engineering.

The event will also feature remarks from Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti, York University President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton, and Vice-President Research & Innovation Amir Asif.

The report, to be launched at the symposium, is the result of the task force’s work to develop ideas and examine options for building and featuring York’s research strengths in AI.  The task force has leveraged collegial expertise and advice to generate recommendations for advancing research and to take advantage of research, scholarship, and academic opportunities in this area.
