York U to honour past Chair of York Board of Governors Paul Cantor at Convocation Oct. 11

Toronto, Oct. 10, 2012 – Paul G. S. Cantor will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws from York University in recognition of his leadership as past Chair of the University’s Board of Governors, on Thursday, Oct. 11. Cantor, who has provided leadership to many corporate boards, will address graduates at the 10:30 Convocation at the Tennis Canada Rexall Centre on York’s Keele Campus (see map).

A senior adviser at Bennette Jones LLP, Cantor joined York’s Board of Governors in 1988, and served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Pension Fund, Chair of the Human Resources, Nominating and Governance Committee, and as a member of the Executive Committee. In 2009, he was appointed Chair, During his three year term, Cantor provided strong support and encouragement to the President, revitalized the Board, worked with the Chair of Senate, set new standards for Board governance, and devolved risk management oversight responsibilities to the Board Committees to provide clearer stewardship.Image of Paul Cantor

In 1997, Cantor became founding Executive Director of The Toronto International Leadership Centre for Financial Sector Supervision, which is sponsored by York University’s Schulich School of Business in partnership with the Canadian government, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. The Centre was established to provide leadership training for senior public servants in emerging market countries who supervise the financial service sector.

He is Chair of the Board of Revera Inc. and of the Global Risk Institute in Financial Services. He also serves as Chair of the ING Bank of Canada Board Risk and Investment Committee and on the Board of Intact Financial Corporation.

In addition to leading York’s Board, Cantor was Chair of the Board of the Public Sector Pension Investment Board, Chairman and CEO of National Trust Company, President and CEO of Confederation Life, and President, Investment Bank, and Canadian Imperial Bank fo Commerce. He was Managing Partner and then Chairman for Canada of Russell Reynolds Associates. Earlier, he served at Canada’s Department of Finance and at the crown corporation Polysar Limited.  He has also served on many other boards and on tax and economic renewal advisory committees.

Convocation ceremonies will take place at the Convocation Pavilion located at the Rexall Centre, 1 Shoreham Drive, at York University’s Keele campus.
